2012/13 STRATEGIC YEARBOOK

Strategic Yearbook cannot be regarded as simply an English version of thePolish Rocznik Strategiczny. Rocznik, which was first published in the mid-1990s, is not limited to hard security questions but covers a large spectrum ofinternational problems with broad security impact, including the geopoliticaldimension. This year, we decided to publish in English only a part of Rocznik,i.e. section entitled The Observatory of Security. The section’s objective isto focus on security sensu stricto. It begins with a general review of theinternational situation, followed by a thorough analysis of specific aspectsof both global and regional security. For obvious reasons, special attention isgiven to the security developments in Eastern Europe. The hope of the teamof authors representing the Institute of International Relations (Universityof Warsaw) is to offer foreign readers a competent insight into the mostimportant and interesting tendencies and events in the security realm of lastyear, as seen from a Central European perspective.
